The ‘Eight Section Brocade’… (Ba Duan Jin)
The ‘Eight Section Brocade’ (Ba Duan Jin), also known as the ‘Eight Silken Movements, is one of the oldest and most renowned qigong sequences. Its origins can be traced back to the Song dynasty, which lasted from 960 to 1279 CE. The sequence was designed to engage every joint, muscle, and energy channel in the body.
Due to its long history, various theories about its origin and development have emerged. The most widely accepted theory attributes the creation of the Eight Section Brocade to General Yue Fei, a military general, poet, and calligrapher from the Song era. He developed these exercises to help keep his soldiers healthy and prepared for battle.
Today, the Eight Section Brocade is one of qigong’s most popular and commonly practiced sequences. Over the years, many variations have been created, and the basic sequence of movements is depicted in the accompanying images.
Each component of the Brocades focuses on cleansing and stimulating the body’s various meridians. They are particularly beneficial for individuals with lower back issues. Each movement aims to strengthen specific body areas while unblocking and enhancing energy flow.
The name “Eight Silken Movements” reflects imparting a smooth, silk-like quality to the muscles, joints, and energy flow. The movements should be fluid and graceful, creating a sensation of silkiness throughout the body upon completing the practice.
Embrace this wonderful practice with confidence and enjoy its transformative benefits.
